Declare St George’s Day a Bank Holiday says UKIP MEP Paul Nuttall
St George’s Day should be declared a Bank Holiday, says local UKIP MEP Paul Nuttall.
Mr Nuttall, UKIP deputy leader, said: “I have long believed that England’s patron saint should be so honoured but it is more pertinent now than ever.
“We are at a major crossroads in this country’s history with the impending EU referendum in June and never has it been so important to stand up and be proud of our English heritage.
“Voting to leave the European Union and its flawed policies, including freedom of movement, is vital and how fantastic would it be if 23 April - St George’s Day - was to made an official bank holiday.
“The Irish wholeheartedly throw themselves into St Patrick’s Day and the Welsh always show their support for St David’s Day.
“I’m glad to say that recognition of St George is growing with more wearing the traditional red rose showing a groundswell of opinion in favour of honouring him.
“Red nose day has become a much loved national event and red rose day should not only be embedded in tradition but marked with a national holiday,” said Mr Nuttall.
“I hope that Saturday will see people proudly wearing a red rose as I shall myself,” he added.
