Redwood School

Date published: 18 April 2016

It has been wonderful to welcome all our youngsters back into school this week at the start of the summer term which will be very busy indeed. You can find details of the various events and activities taking place on the school website and each week via the newsletter I will update parents / carers on imminent events and dates of note.

Easter holiday club programme

Thanks you to parents / carers for your support with the recent holiday club programme which was a huge success. The feedback has been very positive and the theme running through the week enabled all youngsters to participate at their own particular level of interest, as well as take part in other activities planned by the staff team. Planning will take place in the next few weeks for the summer holiday club programme when dates will be confirmed.

Spotlight on Safeguarding

This week the team`s focus is on the many different aspects of `Child Exploitation` as part of our spotlight on safeguarding issues and this will be discussed in assemblies and tutorial lessons in a variety of ways to meet the youngsters level of understanding on this issue.

Parents parking

As the number of parents /carers who transport youngsters to and from school increases, I would ask that those who do please ensure that cars are parked in an appropriate area, particularly at the end of the school day, to avoid any potential issues with the number of mini buses which arrive from 2.30pm onwards.

Pupil Voice – My School Day

This term pupils will be providing feedback on aspects of their school day in a variety of ways to suit their particular needs.

REEC visits

Next week sees the start of a series of visits by students to the REEC, Redwood Education and Enterprise Centre, so that students can sample the working environment as part of the Post 16 options. It is hoped that a number of groups will be able to visit the REEC during the summer term and see for themselves the work programmes in place which helps to prepare our youngsters for adulthood.

We welcome our new Business Manager, Nancy Wright, who has joined the Redwood Team at the start of this term. We all look forward to working with Nancy at the start of her new career challenge.

It’s the start of a sporty Summer Term already, and after a well earned break, students in Key Stage 3 are already getting stuck in to new challenges.

Keep your eyes open for news of an up-coming dance project involving Redwood and Oulder Hill students, working with the “Can’t Dance Can” Company starting next Thursday morning with Mrs Milston.

Also, look out for news about Year 7 and 8 Science work, learning about “Light & Sound” and “States of Matter”.

The PMLD topic this term is Space & Travel” — Rebound activities include sound, lighting and bouncing to the moon.

KS4

Callum helped to sell cakes over at Oulderhill School. He was very anxious at first, however he over came this quickly and was a great help. He did that well we sold out so there wasn’t enough for staff and students at Redwood. Oops sorry everyone.

Students from the SSC visited Ribchester Roman Museum before the Easter break.

On creative Day Mrs Barnes ran a sensory group. The students enjoyed using different materials, making cakes and relaxing.

Students from the SSC went to Bleakholt to hand over the money they had raised selling cakes and with a raffle. They took over £100.

KS5

Students in 6th form were very busy preparing for the Enterprise sale.
Everyone moved around the different activities, making pizza, wrapping the chocolate eggs making vintage bunting, painting ceramic charms and trinkets, decorating picture frames and plenty of baking.

We have seen a lot of independent work but also a lot of cooperation between students, who got to work in groups mixed from the Sensory route and the Skills for Independence route.
