Vincent Simpson: Pensioner who repeatedly drove over his neighbour detained for public protection

Date published: 06 April 2016

Vincent Simpson has been detained in hospital for public protection after repeatedly driving over his 81-year-old neighbour to try and mutilate him.

The 86-year-old impaled his victim on a concrete post during the obscure attack in August last year – leading to his leg being amputated.

Simpson was charged with attempted murder last month, and is thought to be suffering from paranoid psychosis.

The two men had previously had a long standing grievance with one another before the attack happened on 27 August.

Preston Crown Court heard how Simpson twice reversed into his victim, Mr Harrison, who fell to the floor in agony before having his leg crushed against a concrete door frame.

Mr Harrison, who had previously lost his wife of 56 years to cancer, has been left in a wheelchair with his leg amputated from the knee.

Simpson previously pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent and denied attempted murder.

He will face trial for attempted murder.
