Jeremy Corbyn invited to visit Rochdale to discuss budget cuts

Date published: 22 March 2016

Councillor Aasim Rashid has invited Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn to Rochdale to discuss his concerns about government budget cuts and the possible effects on the borough.

Assistant to Cabinet Member for Finance, Councillor Rashid met with the leader at a Labour party Gala Dinner last week, where issues were raised about council services to the borough after large cuts were announced earlier in the year.

Councillor Aasim told Rochdale Online that Mr Corbyn showed an interest in visiting.

He added: “During my meeting with leader I invited him to visit Rochdale, and I also raised concerns about Rochdale people how their day-to-day lives are being affected. Tory austerity and financial cuts are having a huge impact here.

“Rochdale council is facing huge cuts from central government, which have a severe impact on adult care, mental health budgets and generally put the more vulnerable people at risk

“I congratulate Mr Corbyn for his wonderful speech on the budget in House of Commons, and I am sure he will be welcomed here in Rochdale.”
