Final day of fundraising after Jalal Uddin's body is returned to Bangladesh

Date published: 21 March 2016

The last day of fundraising for Qari Jalal Uddin is today (Monday 21 March), after his body was flown back to his family in Bangladesh.

Since the murder of Mr Uddin on 19 February, substantial donations have been flooding in to help pay for his funeral, the flight home and to provide support to wife and children. The online donations have totalled at £13,235 which was almost doubled by large cash donations.

Close friend Mirza Zamal set up the page in the hope of raising £3,000 and said he is overwhelmed by the current amount, which is 441% higher than the target.

He said: “The response and support has been overwhelming, it has gone to show how strong the community of Rochdale is. It has also shown how much unity we have. I would like to thank everyone for supporting us in all their various ways and soon hopefully Qari Jalal Uddin will see his justice.”

Central Rochdale Councillor Ali Ahmed, who was a friend of Jalal, said: “Thank you to everyone for the support. May Allah give you your rewards.”

A memorial service and prayer was held on 11 March at the Jalaia Jaame Mosque.
