Farewell to popular youth worker Mohammed Sheraz

A farewell event was organised in recognition of popular youth worker Mohammed Sheraz, who has worked supporting young people for the last fifteen years.

Councillor Shakil Ahmed, Councillor Sultan Ali, Councillor Lynne Brosnan, Chief Inspector Omar Khan, former Head of Youth Service Edd Kelly, ex - Chief Inspector Nadeem Mir, youth service manager Azizul Hoque, Nadeem Hussain, Qumar Muhamed, Yasin Khan and many youth workers and colleagues gathered to celebrate Mr Sheraz's contribution hard work with multi agencies in supporting, guiding, mentoring and arranging activities.

Speaking about his role, Mr Sheraz said: “It’s an honour to know so many young people, projects, youth and community members in Rochdale - passionate, enthusiastic people, many who have gone on to pass on what they have learned and given something back to their community. Rochdale has some unbelievable people and it’s been a joy for me to meet them.”

Councillor Mohammed Zaman said: “ Mohammed Sheraz has been very influential and active youth worker who has helped and developed many young people, boosting their confidence, self-esteem and supported them in further education, employment, volunteering and training opportunities. He will be missed by many young people and community activists.

“I am very proud to say that he has made a real difference into communities and individuals in the Borough of Rochdale.

“We hope he will still be around to extend his help and support for all especially in difficult times."

Councillor Shakil Ahmed said: “I have known Sheraz for many years and always found him doing something positive for the benefit of community and young people. He has been very active in building bridges across all communities and faiths and has been supporting many projects, groups and individuals in his capacity as youth worker and also in his free and volunteer capacity. We value and acknowledge his good work and hope he continues his good work and supporting projects and communities."

Councillor Asim Rashid said: “His work with young people has been of an excellent standard especially with reduced budgets and cuts in our Borough. He brought many diverse groups of young people in a much friendly and flexible environment that no one can imagine. I am proud to see his work and hope he carries on working with his humble, positive and friendly ways of supporting people across all boundaries, cultures and faiths.”

Mohammed Zarafat and Azizul, from the youth service, said: “We have many memories of excellent youth work projects delivered across the borough of Rochdale with Sheraz."

Sohail Ahmad, manager of Deeplish Community Centre, said: “It has been a pleasure knowing Sheraz and working with him for the past 15 years. He is an asset to local young people and community in supporting, engaging and helping them in all matters. He has been very proactive and vibrant youth worker. He is an extremely true example of cohesion and diversity in my views. We will miss him in his role as youth worker and wish him well for his future work and projects."
