National Grid to take down remaining Rochdale gasholder

Date published: 15 March 2016

National Grid will begin work this month to dismantle the remaining gasholder at its site at Church Street, Rochdale.

It follows the removal of two other gasholders at the site, which were taken down last year as part of a national programme to prepare redundant sites for future regeneration.

National Grid will now dismantle the remaining gasholder piece by piece and fill in holes in the ground, created when the previous gasholders were removed.

The remaining gasholder was constructed in 1894 and rebuilt in 1959. This upgrade took place in order to manage greater demand for gas following the war. The gasholders were used until February 2013, when new ways of storing gas in the transmission system led to the site being made redundant.

Samantha Rendell, Land Regeneration Manager at National Grid, said: “We worked safely and efficiently to take down the two gasholders last year, keeping the local community informed throughout our work. We were also pleased to be able to donate a manufacturer’s plaque to the Touchstones Museum, to tell the story of the gasholders for generations to come.

“Dismantling the remaining gasholder is the next step to clear this disused site and prepare it for future use. We’ll keep local residents updated and aim to finish the work as quickly and with as little disruption as we can.”
