Ambitious plans to create 100 new allotments

Date published: 14 March 2016

An ambitious plan to create 100 new allotments has been proposed by the local Labour party as part of its 'green manifesto'.

Council officers have been asked to identify vacant sites it owns suitable for turning into allotment plots.

Councillor Jacqui Beswick, cabinet member for the environment, said: "Allotments are very popular and the Council has a long waiting list.

"We are looking at a number of sites around the borough big enough for between 10 and 20 plots.

"Over the years the Council has acquired a number of sites that are not suitable for development but would make ideal allotments.

"The cost of dividing them into individual plots is quite minimal and will be funded from the sale of other surplus land.

"Allotments are so popular, people are queuing up to rent one. I am puzzled why no one has thought of this before."

Tending an allotment is also good for your health. A recent Dutch study among the over 60s found those with allotments enjoyed better health and lived longer. Other studies have found digging an allotment is better for you than exercising in the gym.

Councillor Sultan Ali, who waited an astonishing 19 years before being allocated an allotment last year, said: "They are as scarce as bird droppings in a cuckoo clock.

"Our allotment is very much a family affair. You cannot beat home grown fruit and veg. They are so better for you and taste much nicer. Plus it does wonders for your stress levels to get out in the open air away from all the hustle and bustle."
