Paul Nuttall MEP to attend London Commonwealth service

Regional MEP Paul Nuttall will be among invited guests attending a high profile Commonwealth Day service in Westminster Abbey on Monday (14 March).

The Queen and other senior members of the Royal family will be present at the annual Commonwealth Service as will dignitaries from across the UK and the Commonwealth.

Mr Nuttall, UKIP deputy leader, has long been a keen supporter of Commonwealth Day and has written to councils throughout his North West constituency urging them to fly the Commonwealth flag on Monday.

“I am pleased that I have had a positive response from some of the local authorities as I believe it is such an important issue and particularly more so with the looming EU referendum.

“We need to leave the European Union and we will then be free to trade with our traditional partners, the Commonwealth countries,” he said.

“Some local authorities are all to happy to fly the flag of the European Union and other commemorative flags such as the rainbow LGBT one and they should all fly the Commonwealth flag.

“It is important that we never forget that our friends in the Commonwealth are our kith and kin. We have a shared language, culture and heritage that far surpasses anything we share with continental Europe.

“This country stands at the cross roads of destiny right now and we need to leave the EU and make our own trade agreements with whatever countries we want but particularly those in the Commonwealth.

“We are currently tied down to the only trading block in the world that remains terminally stagnant - the EU - when we should be rekindling our relationship with a voluntary block that encompasses fast growing, emerging economies such as Nigeria, India and Malaysia.
