Mum bids for compensation after damp and mould make her children ill

Date published: 10 March 2016

A mum-of-three who says extreme damp and mould have made her children ill has asked for compensation from Rochdale Boroughwide Housing.

The Middleton mum, who wishes to remain anonymous, says that black mould and “soggy patches” around the house have caused her 15-year-old daughter to develop swollen lymph nodes and cold-like symptoms, and says the condition of her house also puts her 14-month-old baby at risk. Her 18-year old also living in the house has been struggling sleeping close to damp walls.

She said: “It’s been hell. The walls are wet through, you can even see the patches just by walking into the room.

“I’ve only been in the house for a year, and when I first moved in I decorated everything. That’s been totally ruined now and I can’t afford to do it all again.

“More importantly, I have a 14-month-old baby in the house and it’s just not healthy. I want some sort of compensation, and this needs fixing.”

Rochdale Boroughwide Housing has confirmed repeated visits to the house in Boarshaw, and says that the issue is being taken seriously.

A spokesperson said: “Following a referral from our neighbourhood housing officer, an RBH technical officer carried out an inspection on Tuesday 23 February.

“As a result of this inspection RBH team members have attended on a number of occasions, and we aim to complete repair work to the home as quickly as possible to remove any damp and prevent any reoccurrence.”
