Man and pregnant woman threatened with a hammer during break-in

Date published: 09 March 2016

Two men armed with hammers forced their way into an address on Rouse Street, Sudden, Rochdale, at 8.45pm on Monday (7 March). Once inside the house the two offenders subjected the occupants, a man and a pregnant woman, to a severe and brutal attack in which they were tied up, had their faces covered and were repeatedly assaulted.

During the attack the woman, who is 30 weeks pregnant, was threatened with a hammer. The man was so badly beaten he has sustained life changing injuries.

The two offenders demanded money from the victims before leaving the address.

It is thought that the offenders may have left the area in an ‘old style’ silver vehicle that could have possibly been a Mercedes Benz.

Detective Constable Sarah O’Connor, from GMP’s Rochdale division, said: “This was a terrifying and violent attack on the occupants of the house which has left the expectant mother traumatised and the man suffering life changing injuries.

"I would like to reassure the public that we are doing everything we can to identify those responsible for committing this violent crime and bring them to justice.

"At this stage we believe that the attack was unprovoked and is an isolated incident.

"I would like to appeal for any witnesses to come forward who may have been in the area at the time or who may have witnessed the offenders or the silver vehicle.

"If anyone has any information, no matter how small or insignificant they think it may be, please get in touch with Police at Rochdale Police Station on 0161 856 8588.

"Alternatively anybody with information can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”
