Volunteers raise thousands for Palestine

Date published: 04 March 2016

Volunteers for SKT Welfare got out their soapy sponges and raised thousands in a successful charity car wash raising money for Palestine.

The group got together at Rochdale Fire Station on Halifax Road where they washed over 50 cars and received generous donations from drivers.

A total of £1,250 was made from the washing cars, but due to other generous donations and small events the amount has risen to a whopping £8,000.

Amjad Haq, who helped organise the event said: “We were only supposed be doing it between nine and five, but we ended up staying later because there were so many people getting involved. We had 50 goody bags to give out and they were long gone halfway through the day, so it’s safe to say we washed well over 50 cars.

“We volunteer for this charity because it means a lot to us. It has a 100% donation policy, so basically anything we make for them goes straight to the volunteers without any outsourcing or anything like that. It doesn’t always happen like that with charities, but this one is great, and it just makes us want to work harder to make more money.”

He added: “We had raised about £6,000 in total, but this morning I got a call from someone who donated another £2,000 to us. I couldn’t believe it. We are up to £8,000 now which we are really over the moon about.”

SKT Welfare is a UK-registered charity, founded in 2008, dedicated to the delivery of humanitarian aid and solutions regardless of race, political affiliation, gender or belief. Its aim is to help relieve the suffering of the world’s poorest communities.

Since its inception, the charity has accomplished several projects in the UK, Pakistan, India, Morocco, Somalia and more recently, Palestine. However, since 2011 and the onset of the crisis in Syria, SKT Welfare has re-oriented most of its efforts addressing the humanitarian fallout from this conflict, and has become instrumental in delivering aid to Syrians in need, both inside Syria and within refugee camps in neighbouring countries.

The charity has evolved and adapted itself successfully to what is an extremely difficult conflict zone to function within, operationally and logistically.
