Flying Horse goes eco-friendly

Date published: 02 March 2016

The caterers responsible for the Flying Horse Hotel’s popular new menu have announced they are going green for “guilt free dining”.

Quirky Catering, the company behind the new pub grub, now buys entirely local produce which is delivered in an electric van to save on fuel. If that isn’t green enough, the team have even switched to compostable trays for take away food, allowing customers to throw them away into brown bins.

Local produce, says owner Ben Boothman, is a step in the right direction for supporting the local economy and also for being environmentally friendly. The move is part of a new initiative to show how pub food and take away food can be high quality and healthy with the right ingredients.

He said: “After all the bad press that comes with take away food, we wanted to show that having food delivered to your door doesn't have to be bad for you.

“We set out with the idea of changing how we operate and with this we no longer wanted to be bad for the environment in both fuel costs and loads of polystyrene packaging clogging landfills.”

“Our food is cooked with the customers health in mind, grilled and dry pan fried when possible which, starting next week, will be packaged in compostable boxes so you can throw your rubbish away in your brown bins or even toss on your compost heap. We have purchased the electric van to deliver our food and buffets so it really is guilt free dining.”

The Flying Horse Hotel changed its menus late last year and has had a very good response. Mr Boothman added: “It has rocketed since we changed it. It has been doing really well, and we want Quirky Catering to continue its success.”
