Gulf War commemorations at Rochdale Town Hall

Date published: 27 February 2016

Commemorations of the Gulf War continued with a grand festival at Rochdale Town Hall tonight (Saturday 27 February).

The evening comprised of The Scots Guards Association Pipes and Drums, The Fusilier Association Band, the Fusilier Association Corps of Drums and the Ambassadors Tribute Act, in the presence of the Mayor and Mayoress of Rochdale.

Steve Cooney, of the Fusiliers Association: "It has been an overwhelming turnout tonight and it is great to see how much local support there is in Rochdale. The local people have made a stand to commemorate the men who lost their lives and tonight's event, along with last night's commemoration at the cenotaph, just shows how much people still care."

Colonel Mike Glover added: "We are really grateful for the way Rochdale comes together to remember those who paid the ultimate price in the Gulf War. It is important that we don't forget."

Colonel Denny, who fought in the Gulf War, said: "25 years ago today we were three days into the war. It is still raw for some people, and we really appreciate the support we have from the people who weren't. It makes us proud to see the people of Rochdale support not just the Fusiliers but the Armed Forces as a whole."

Councillor Alan McCarthy said: "As a community we should honour the sacrifices of these men and also the sacrifices made by those who did return home. By holding a service of remembrance and a festival we can show as a community that we appreciate the work these servicemen did. It shows those who served during the conflict that we have not forgotten."
