Facebook delaying police probe into death threat against Simon Danczuk‏

Date published: 26 February 2016

Rochdale MP Simon Danczuk has slammed Facebook for failing to cooperate with UK police over crimes committed through the social media site.

The comments come after police confirmed that an investigation into death threats made against the MP has stalled due to a slow response from Facebook’s Californian HQ.

Great Manchester Police launched an investigation in early December after Mr Danczuk received a series of threatening messages via his official Facebook page.

The graphic and violent threats were made following a House of Commons vote on military action against terrorist group ISIS.

Three months into the investigation, Greater Manchester Police have contacted Mr Danczuk to say they are still waiting for Facebook to provide details of the users behind the threats.

Mr Danczuk said: “This is a much wider issue than just one case.

“Reports of crimes linked to social media have increased year-on-year, yet major companies like Facebook have done little to improve communications with law enforcement.

“Officers have told me how frustrating it is that a multi-billion pound company like Facebook cannot find the resources to respond promptly to a simple query.

“With its huge global reach, Facebook has a responsibility to make sure its users are safe. Sadly, in this area, it is failing to live up to its responsibility.”
