Warning after spate of taxi cab windows smashed

Date published: 26 February 2016

Taxi drivers are being warned to be vigilant after a spate of cab windows being smashed over the past week.

Police have received a number of reports of taxis around the centre of Rochdale having their windows smashed, although to date they have not been linked to thefts.

It appears that the attacks are specifically targeting taxis.

One driver, who preferred to remain anonymous, said: “Unfortunately this has been a problem for some time. It is getting worse, I know lots of my colleagues who had their windows smashed. There were nine just over the weekend that we know of.

“It is a problem in the town, I don’t know why taxis are being targeted. We don’t deserve this.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “We have been made aware of these break-ins happening around Rochdale and we are urging taxi drivers to take extra care.

"We are looking for anyone with information to contacts us immediately.”

Police are urging anyone with information to come forward by calling 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
