Women's Housing Action Group Gardening Project needs your vote

Date published: 23 February 2016

Women's Housing Action Group (WHAG) has started a garden project at their supported housing project and they are hoping to get help for funding the scheme from the Galaxy Hot Chocolate Fund 2015/16.

Every week, until 28 February, Galaxy will be looking to help local community groups and charities across the UK and Ireland by awarding five £300 cash awards a week.

Four of these will be awarded by our judges’ panel. There will also be a People’s Choice Award every week which will be awarded to the entry with the most votes in any given week.

WHAG want to win so they can continue to support tenants grow their own produce which they can use in cooking sessions.

The Garden project helps WHAG clients to work as a team, to get outdoors and active and promotes healthy eating and saving money by growing own produce.

WHAG would use the prize money to buy more raised beds, storage boxes/shed for tools and garden equipment, more gardening tools, seeds, bulbs and flowers. Also to purchase educational books on gardening and growing own produce. They hope that once clients move on independently, they'll have the skills to continue with growing their own produce and flowers.

WHAG offers supported accommodation to vulnerable women who are at risk of being homeless. Supports women with managing a tenancy, accessing training/education, substance/alcohol issues and with mental health. Offers a resettlement service and help women to find and set up their own tenancies. Provides one-to-one support and group work activities to promote independence, health and wellbeing.
