Jalal Uddin: Flowers laid by grieving relatives and friends

Date published: 22 February 2016

The spot where Qari Jalal Uddin was found shortly before he died was visited today (22 February) by grieving relatives and friends who wished to pay their respects and say goodbye.

Rochdale MP Simon Danczuk also arrived at the playground, off South Street, to offer his condolences and support.

Although there is still a constant police presence on the corner of South Street the area is no longer cordoned off, and the playground has been opened up to those wishing to lay flowers at the scene.

Councillor Ali Ahmed comforted Abdul Bashir, a cousin of Mr Uddin, as he wept at the spot where he was found last week.

Councillor Ahmed said: “This is a very difficult time for everyone. I think seeing the flowers and the exact spot where he was found is difficult for those who are grieving, but the area has opened up now, so anyone who wants to go there and pay their respects is welcome to do so.”

Mr Danczuk said: “Mr Uddin was a well-regarded, peaceful man, a very gentle man. He was well thought of in his local mosque and among the Bangladeshi community. I’ve spoken to people today and they’re all in shock and really upset. I send my condolences to his family.”

A second post mortem examination is to take place today.

More information about funeral plans are to follow this week.
