REAG holds AGM and celebrates 70th birthdays of two members

Rochdale Environmental Action Group (REAG) held its Annual General Meeting at Castlemere Community Centre, and celebrated the 70th birthdays of two of its members on Saturday 13 February.

A birthday cake was shared with members for Ghulam Shahzad and Sister Noel.

REAG members said both Ghulam and Sister Noel were role models for other people to follow.

Ghulam Shahzad and Sister Noel said: “We feel that the activities of REAG are healthy for us and learning about various environmental issues and meeting with members of all section of the community.

"We are committed and a passionate about improving the environment of the Borough of Rochdale.

“It is important that all people, i.e. young, old, men, women, should take it as personal challenge and contribute. Rochdale is our town and the town of our future generation. It's beauty is the beauty of the people of the Borough of Rochdale. Let's make it more beautiful.”

The Chairwoman, Christine Matthewson, presented her report to the members present and said 2015 has been good for REAG as they received the runner up award from Keep Britain Tidy and REAG was nominated for the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service.

Ms Matthewson said she appreciated the hard work and effort by members and said although it is slow REAG is making difference in improving the environment of the Borough of Rochdale.

Secretary, publicity, treasurer and neighbourhood officers also submitted their reports.

The following were elected to office:

  • Chairwoman: Christine Mathewson 
  • Vice Chairwoman: Caroline Lucas
  • Secretary: Ghulam Rasul Shahzad OBE
  • Publicity Secretary: George Lee
  • Treasurer: Naeem Khan
  • Neighbourhood Officer: Sister Noel
