Promoting coronary health and healthy hearts seminar at Deeplish Community Centre

Date published: 20 February 2016

As part of health and wellbeing programme, Deeplish Community Centre organised Health Awareness Day on 18 February to provide information and advice to local residents about a healthy life style.

Dr Saeed Ahmed, who worked for many years as local GP at Baillie Street Surgery, and his colleague Dr Huyamun delivered the session about coronary heart disease.

They provided important information about daily exercise routines, food consumption and balanced diets, detailed information on smoking and its harmful effects, and what happens if  the signs and symptoms for coronary heart disease is ignored.

They explained that coronary heart diseases appear commonly after the age of 40 but it does not mean health advice before the age of 40 can be ognored.

Research suggests exercising at least five hours per week. Exercise can be a walk, simple exercise at home and also can be gym activities. However, people with coronary heart disease should consult their doctor for suitable and appropriate exercise plan and advice.

The doctorsemphasised that communities from South Asian origin are more likely to be a victim of blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart diseases due to food consumption, life styles, and other cultural reasons and advised everyone to adopt an active life style well before the age of 40 to avoid these serious illnesses and have regular check-ups on a regular basis.

Dr Saeed Ahmed said: “The key to good health is regular exercise and balanced diet and active lifestyle.

“I was pleased to deliver this health talk to local community members at Deeplish Community Centre and plan to deliver more talks on various topics in future months.”

Councillor Mohammed Zaman said: “Participants had the opportunity to have a detailed question and answer session with Dr Saeed in their own community languages.

"The talk was well presented and clearly understood by all participants and was very informative.

"Everyone really appreciated their time and the discussion and requested to arrange such health related seminars in future.”

Sohail Ahmad, Manager at Deeplish Community Centre, said: “We are grateful for Dr Saeed Ahmed and his colleague Dr Huyamun for their efforts, preparation and delivery of this coronary health talk.

"We hope to plan many more health and wellbeing talks and activities in future."
