Freedom of the Borough proposed for Major Edmund T Gartside

A proposal to admit Major Edmund Gartside as an Honorary Freeman of the Borough will be considered at an Extraordinary Meeting of the Council to be held on 24 February 2016 at 6.15pm, immediately prior to the Budget Fixing Meeting of the Council.

Educated at Winchester and Trinity College Cambridge, Major Gartside served in the Lancashire Fusiliers and commanded a Territorial Army company in Rochdale.

  • National Service 1952 - 1954
  • 1957 B Company becoming Company Commander
  • 1967 Company Commander of 4th East Lancs (LF) and then T & V 4 Disbanded
  • Award TD in 1968
  • President of Rochdale and Distract Fusilier Association 1970-2013
  • President of the Rochdale Royal British Legion 1987-89 and 1990-1991
  • High Sheriff of Greater Manchester 1995-6
  • Member of almost every committee (Lancashire Fusiliers and Royal Regiment of Fusiliers) and became the Finance Director of the new Fusilier Museum at Bury until retiring 2015.
