Attempted robbery at Hamer post office cash machine

Date published: 15 February 2016

A man attempted to steal cash from a woman at a cash machine at midnight on Thursday 4 February 2016.

The man approached a 32-year-old woman who was withdrawing money from a cash machine outside Hamer post office on Halifax Road in Hamer.

The man put his arm around her neck and pulled her backwards causing her to lose balance.

He demanded cash but the woman managed to free herself. She got into her friend’s car that was waiting nearby and drove away as the man produced a knife from his pocket.

A 45-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery and has been bailed pending further enquiries.

Police are appealing for information and witnesses.

PC Dave Harrison said: “The woman was naturally shocked by what happened and it was lucky she managed to free herself and get away. While the man did not threaten to harm her, he was seen to pull a knife from his pocket as she got into the car to get away.

“We would urge the public to remain vigilant and if anyone sees any suspicious behaviour or has information about this incident please call police.”

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
