Sandbrook Primary School taking more pupils
Sandbrook Primary School on Queensway is to be expanded by 30 pupils for each year group from September.
The school will now accept 90 pupils for each of the six year groups instead of 60. The increase is to cater for the growing population in the area.
Rochdale Borough Council's Cabinet approved the changes last week after a consultation exercise with parents, pupils, teachers and residents.
The extra school places have been welcomed by council leader and local councillor Richard Farnell. He said: "These extra places are desperately needed for the Kirkholt and Queensway area. Last September, many local children were turned away because the school was full. A lot of parents were very angry and children upset.
"Ideally these changes should have happened last year to avoid all the heartache. Since then, I have been working hard behind the scenes to extend the school by an extra class for each year group.
"Sandbrook is a great school and is very popular, and is well supported by the whole community. The extra places in September will be welcomed by local parents worried whether there would be a place for their child."
