Leighton McCluskey wins Childer Award
Date published: 29 January 2016
Leighton McCluskey is the winner of the Childer Award 2016 at Newlands Special Primary School, in Middleton.
Leighton was voted the winner by the school staff team who were very impressed with his determination to succeed and the fantastic progress he has made in terms of communication and mobility.
Newlands were delighted to welcome Keith and Marilyn Fairhurst, on behalf of Rochdale Childer, to present the Award to Leighton.
This was their second visit to Newlands and the pupils and staff really appreciated the way they joined in with the celebration. As you can see, Leighton was absolutely thrilled with his medal.
Ben Jackson and Laura Mann were also nominated for the award and received special certificates in the Childer Celebration assembly.
The families of Leighton, Ben and Laura were welcomed by the pupils and staff as special guests.
Ben was nominated because he has made real progress with his communication and delights everyone with his enthusiasm for performing.
Laura was nominated because staff recognise how much her confidence has grown in all aspects of her school life. Laura has a very caring personality and is becoming more independent too.
Well done to all three youngsters – Newlands is very proud of you.
