KYP helping keep Rochdale online

Date published: 27 January 2016

Kashmir Youth Project (KYP) is offering free access to its IT facilities after flood damage forced the library at Number One Riverside to close.

KYP on Belfield Road, Rochdale is opening its doors to residents who usually rely on the library’s public computers to access online services.

Computers at KYP will be available from 9am – 5pm every Tuesday and Thursday while the library at Number One Riverside is closed.

All 28 of the library’s computers are currently unavailable. Before the floods they were being used over 5,000 times every month by residents.

Zulf Ahmed, Chief Executive of KYP Rochdale, said: “The Boxing Day floods affected our local areas terribly and we really wanted to help in any way we could. We hope that by offering the use of our computers we’ll be able to support our communities and residents in some small way; be it giving students the resources they need to study or jobseekers the chance to find employment.”

Councillor Richard Farnell, the leader of Rochdale Council, said: “Public internet access allows local residents, who might not have computer access at home, the opportunity to complete important, everyday tasks such as paying bills or completing homework; and it is vital that we continue to provide this resource.

"I am so proud of how our borough has come together during the recent flooding and this is another perfect example of our communities supporting one another.

"I would like to thank KYP for their invaluable help in keeping Rochdale online during the clean-up.”

Alternative provisions are also available at libraries across the borough, including extended opening hours at Balderstone Library and Spotland Library.
