MEP Paul Nuttall calls for an English Parliament
Local MEP Paul Nuttall has voiced his support for an English anthem but described it as a mere distraction from the real issue - establishing an English Parliament.
His comments come in the wake of a House of Commons debate resulting in MPs giving initial support for England adopting an official anthem.
“Yes, by all means let’s have an anthem for England, why shouldn’t we sing our love for it? The Welsh and Scots are happy to vocalise their pride in their homeland and we should have the same opportunity.
“But it’s like the icing on the cake - and the cake in the form of an English Parliament doesn’t yet exist,” said Mr Nuttall, UKIP deputy leader.
“Polls have shown the majority of the public support England having its own parliament and this is something I’ve personally been pushing for several years.
“The Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish got their parliament and assemblies but the English got nothing which left the UK unbalanced and the vast majority of people unrepresented.
“it is obviously a move in the right direction that we now have English votes for English laws but it that does not go far enough as far as I am concerned.
“Establishing an English parliament would be difficult and complex and that’s why I believe we should call a Constitutional Convention, made up of the best academics and constitutionalists in the country, and come up with a long-term solution.”
