Multi-vehicle crash on the M62
The multi-vehicle crash on the M62 brought traffic chaos throughout Greater Manchester for almost nine hours yesterday.
Police closed all eastbound lanes near junction 18 at Simister following the smash involving a lorry and several other vehicles just after noon.

There were no serious injuries, but the closures caused huge tailbacks to the M60 through Prestwich and Salford and the M66 southbound, towards Simister Island from Bury.
All lanes reopened at 6pm but traffic didn’t return to normal until after 9pm. The traffic caused delays on roads in Rochdale, with drivers leaving the motorway to escape the problem.
The traffic problems also extended to bus and tram links.
