Buses to replace trains as work on a new Rochdale train station platform gets under way

Date published: 13 January 2016

Local rail passengers are being advised to check before they travel on Sundays in the coming weeks, as construction work gets under way to build a new platform at Rochdale Train Station.

Replacement buses will be replacing trains between Rochdale and Manchester on Sundays - National Rail says it is best to check online before travelling to avoid any confusion.

As previously reported on Rochdale Online, work is already underway removing trees to make way for the new platform, which is expected to be completed in May 2016.

The work to renew tracks, strengthen bridges and improve the signalling system, which will start on 23 January, will enable the station to support more trains and facilitate faster journey times.

Richard Greenwood, from local rail pressure group STORM, said: “Work is now proceeding on a single bay at the Manchester end of Rochdale station. As work has started it has become apparent that a loop could easily be provided, albeit shorter than the 900 yards originally proposed.

"The up Manchester bound mainline will swing away from the existing platform three and face immediately west of the concrete bridge over the underpass. This gives the opportunity to incorporate a turnout in the platform three track work facing into the new bay platform line.”

Nick Spall, route delivery director for Network Rail, said: “I would like to thank passengers for their patience and would urge them to check before they travel with National Rail Enquiries or their train operator for the latest information.”
