Owen shows there’s more than one road to success

Owen Roads, 16, from Littleborough, has shown how there is more than one road to career success after GCSEs.

Owen has always wanted to be a chef. When he completed his GCSEs, he got an job working as an apprentice commis chef at Littleborough Cricket Club.

Owen explains: “My uncle Steven was a head chef in a restaurant in Manchester, so that’s how I first got the idea of becoming a chef. I like cooking for people. I like making it look presentable and taste nice, etc., so I don’t mind about the high-pressured environment.”

“I have worked at the cricket club since I was 13, helping out as a waiter, so when the head chef suggested the apprenticeship role I went for it.”

As well as cooking lunches and dinners, Owen gets to carry out other projects, like preparing a three-tier wedding cake for a wedding reception for 60 people.

Owen, who passed all of his GCSEs, hopes to one day open his own locally-based restaurant, of which he says: “I love Italian food and pasta, so it’ll probably be an Italian one.”
