Calling all the heroes: search is on for Her Majes-tea’s 90th birthday celebration

Date published: 09 January 2016

The search is on for the borough’s heroes who can be part of a right royal celebration in Rochdale to mark Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th birthday later this year.

Deserving local residents will be invited to an extra special celebration event at Rochdale Town Hall on Sunday June 12.

The event will feature performances from musicians, dancers and choirs as well as local actors and artists and will include a patron’s afternoon tea.

There are 175 free places available, which will be allocated to local residents nominated by members of the public.

They can include charity champions, selfless volunteers, people who look after elderly neighbours, run toddlers' groups for hard-pressed parents or simply make life better for those around them.

Anyone who lives or works in the borough can nominate a person they feel has made a contribution to the community.

Councillor Janet Emsley, Rochdale Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Health and Wellbeing, said: “We want to recognise extraordinary achievements of ordinary people, who put in hours of hard work, day in, day out to help others locally. We know there are many individuals worthy of recognition.”

“I encourage people to get their nominations in so their dedication can be rewarded and celebrated at this event.

"Life in the borough has changed immeasurably over the last 90 years and although the council works hard there are many residents who have been helping us by going the extra mile for their communities without being asked to do so.”

To nominate someone visit www.rochdale.gov.uk/events or email events@rochdale.gov.uk with their name and why you think they should be considered.

The closing date for nominations is 19 February 2016, with invitations being issued during the last week in March.

Guests will be chosen from those nominated by a panel of representatives covering all four townships.
