Letter from Parliament - Simon Danczuk MP

Date published: 07 January 2016

Being an MP in the public eye is always a demanding and challenging job. But this past week has been without doubt the most difficult and emotionally draining since I was first elected in 2010.

By far the worst aspect of the recent media coverage of my personal life has been the feeling that I have let the people of Rochdale down.

I would like to take this opportunity to repeat my apology to all of my constituents. My behaviour was inappropriate and I am deeply sorry for my actions.

I am however incredibly grateful to all those who have gone out of their way to send me messages of support at this difficult time. I have been humbled by the positive comments I have received from constituents in the last week and I am more proud than ever to represent Rochdale.

What has been clear to me as I have met with members of the local community in recent days is that the vast majority of residents want me to carry on the work I have done as Rochdale’s MP. You have my word that I will redouble my efforts and work even harder for the community.

It is my sincere hope that the recent coverage in the tabloid press will not overshadow some of the great work that is being done in Rochdale.

As we look forward to a New Year and a fresh start after the devastating Boxing Day floods, I believe that 2016 will be a year of positive stories for our town.

The town centre economy is already starting to turn a corner and I expect we will see more signs of this. Regeneration on this scale does not happen overnight, but every empty property that is filled by a new shop or business is a step in the right direction.

The project to reopen the River Roch is expected to be completed very soon. We have already seen the benefits of this work after experts confirmed that the new opening helped divert flood water away from Rochdale Town Hall.

Together with the progress of the Town Centre East development, there will be plenty to celebrate over the next 12 months.

I look forward to continuing my work as your representative in the House of Commons and to championing local causes at every opportunity.
