Rochdale Artist Vincent James will open a Solo Exhibition ‘The Grand Scheme of Things’ at PAPER

Date published: 03 January 2016

PAPER Gallery in Manchester is kicking off the New Year with a solo-exhibition ‘The Grand Scheme of Things’ from Rochdale based Artist Vincent James.

Vincent James returns to PAPER, from Saturday 9 January to Saturday 20 February, presenting The Grand Scheme of Things. Inspired by his Exploring PAPER residency last summer; The Grand Scheme of Things is an exhibition featuring new works including animations, sculpture, drawings and a large room-sized collage mural.

Using imagery from popular cartoons, Vincent James creates surreal sculptures, paintings and animations. As world events continue to take a darker turn, Vincent reflects these in his artworks. The exhibition has a post-apocalyptic feel featuring explosions, falling rubble and toxic waterfalls. Despite this, there is a sense of hope and celebration of life emerging from the wreckage. Jeffrey Lewis’ album title It’s the One’s Who’ve Cracked That the Light Shines Through from 2003 has been an inspiration for Vincent while putting together this exhibition.

Vincent James said about his work "… it's the background objects or props from cartoons that become the stars of the artwork. My intention with this show is to immerse the viewer in the process of stop-motion so they feel like they are in an animation."

After completing an MA at Goldsmiths in 1999, Vincent James has exhibited nationally and internationally. His work is part of the Touchstones Art Gallery Permanent Collection and Frederick R Weisman Art Foundation Collection, California. Visitors to Bury’s Light Night over the last three years will remember his site-specific installations projected into empty shop windows. Since the residency PAPER has presented Vincent at The Manchester Contemporary and Sluice Art Fair

The exhibition is funded by Arts Council of England through Grants for the Arts.
