New footpath around the medieval mere in Springfield Park

Date published: 03 January 2016

A new footpath has been created around the medieval mere in Springfield Park.

There are also new plants in the old rose beds near the tennis courts, which contain low maintenance evergreen shrubs to add shape, structure and year round colour to the park.

Friends of Springfield Park are also planning their biggest £1 million plus project to renovate Mereside House into a café and events rooms, incorporating toilet facilities and additional parking.

David Logan, Friends of Springfield Park, said: “We have just been awarded £15k by the RMBC Action & Resources Committee for more hoop top fencing around the mere to safeguard children, because the current fencing is far too low, which becomes more apparent and important now that the mere pathway has been installed.

“A couple of months ago Springfield Park was also awarded a Royal Horticultural Society, North West in Bloom, 2015 'It's Your Neighbourhood' Award, Level 4 Certificate for all the work we have done in the last three years.

“All of this has been achieved with the advice, help and support of RMBC Environmental Management Officers, Counillor Pat Sullivan, Councillor Jane Gartside and Councillor Ian Duckworth.

“We have also enjoyed the valuable support of many other Rochdale councillors in many different wards too.”
