Families devastated by floods

Date published: 27 December 2015

Mamoon Miah's home on Weedon Street was badly affected by flooding. He said: “We have lost everything and we don’t know when we will be able to get it all sorted.

"I was asleep at the time and the water just started to rise. Luckily I woke up in time.

"Everyone has moved out of the house for now and we are staying with relatives but there is only so long that you can stay with them.”

Houses on Kellet Street and Heyes Street in Rochdale were also badly hit by the flooding.

One resident on Kellet Street said: “We still have no electricity because our meter is in the cellar and the cellar is full of water. We are waiting for the pump to come so we don’t even know when we will have power back. We don’t have any gas either.”

Councillor Ahmed reassured residents that a pump was coming to the area and that a skip would also be arriving.

A number of local mosques and members from Gower Street Youth Base are offering help to anyone affected by flooding.

Sajid Yasin from The Golden Mosque said: “People were really grateful for the help we were giving them and we had a huge response to the plea we put out for supplies. We had donations of candles and torches.”

The Golden Mosque is hoping to provide food from 5pm this evening for those affected by the loss of power. Sajid can be contacted on 07877 769414.

Members of Gower Street Youth Base worked through the night to ensure that supplies reached local residents who needed them.

Councillor Ali Ahmed said: “Mohammed Sheraz and the team have been absolutely brilliant and have worked through the night and all of today to make sure people have supplies.”
