Nadim family serve up Christmas cracker for the homeless

Date published: 25 December 2015

Ahmed and Hamila Nadim spread some Christmas cheer by inviting the homeless people to a spectacular festive feast at St Chad’s Church.

Almost 100 people got together on Christmas Eve to enjoy a tasty curry served up by Ahmed Nadim, his wife Hamila and other family members, who put the event on for a second time.

Local organisations which help the homeless, including Petrus, put the guest list together with support from Rochdale Borough Council, while Reverend Mark Colman offered the use of the beautiful medieval building, which is the oldest church in the borough.

Among those attending were people who are no longer homeless, but who are being helped back into work and training by local charities.

It was a family affair for lawyer Ahmed, who lives in Bamford, with his wife, daughters and sisters and brothers also pitching in.

He said: “I was born in Rochdale and this community has given myself and my family so many opportunities, we wanted to give something back. I’m also a Muslim, but this event will have a Christian ethos. It’s important for us to show that these two faiths are totally compatible.”

The Nadim family drafted in a chef to cook the lunch and also used top quality cutlery and crockery, so guests could enjoy a silver service.

They also put on entertainment, including carols and laughter yoga, which encourages participants to laugh to boost their wellbeing

Ahmed added: “Homelessness can happen to anyone. I’ve met some fascinating people at this event. One lady I met speaks several languages and was a senior civil servant, but was dealt a bad hand and ended up homeless.”

Councillor Richard Farnell, Leader of Rochdale Borough Council, said: “Mr Nadim and his family have chosen to do this for no reason other than to help some of our most vulnerable residents and I’m proud to see such kindness in our community.”
