Typewriter art is a huge success for Rochdale born artist Ann Worsnip

Date published: 24 December 2015

Rochdale born artist Ann Worsnip's typewriter art continues to capture the imagination of those around her.

Ann, who attended Balderstone School and Rochdale College, picked up a typewriter at a car boot sale and began her artwork from there.

Speaking to Rochdale Online she said: “I started by making some portraits of my nephews children last Christmas and it hasn’t stopped since then really. If you had said to me last Christmas that I would still be doing it today, then I wouldn’t have believed you.”

Ann stumbled upon typewriter art after discovering an artist with cerebral palsy, who used his typewriter to make his artwork.

Ann, who produces her work under the name ‘Oi Doris’, added: “I used to work as an art technician at a school and when we were looking for inspiration for the GCSE students we would stumble upon some great things. I came across an artist who had cerebral palsy and he would use his typewriter to make art work. I thought it was great.”

Since her first pieces last Christmas, Ann has been asked to do a variety of images.

“I have done everything from bikes to portraits to cars,” said Ann. “People just come to me with ideas really.”

As well as doing commissioned pieces for people, Ann makes greetings cards out of the images she produces and is set to exhibit at a large trade show in London.

Ann said: “I have found that the greetings cards are really popular so in the next year I hope to be doing that more as well as more of my commissions.”

Now living in Lytham St Annes, Ann’s work is currently on display at The Grand Theatre in Blackpool.

Ann added: “I am really glad that I started to do this. When I was at school I was told that I couldn’t do art because I couldn’t draw but really art isn’t just about drawing.

“I am really happy that I have found something that I can do that I enjoy. The reaction has been great.”
