RSPCA charity shop burglary

Date published: 23 December 2015

The RSPCA charity shop on Yorkshire Street in Rochdale Town Centre was broken into on Saturday (19 December) night with the offender making off with £50 as well as collection tins and costume jewellery.

It is understood that the offender made their way onto the roof of the shop and managed to remove a roof tile to get inside. Once inside, the offender caused hundreds of pounds worth of damage.

Shirley Mellor, shops area coordinator for RSPCA Rochdale, said: “We don't keep money in the shop overnight - apart from the float of £50.

"To steal from anyone is bad but to steal from a charity is despicable. It's like stealing money from the animals in our care.

"The damage has been repaired and extra security measures have been put in place.”

Staff at the shop are also concerned about the increase in people breaking into the bin at the back of the shop.

Shirley added: “I know it seems unbelievable but people go through our rubbish. I have no idea what they are looking for because if we are throwing it away then it really is rubbish. They throw the rubbish everywhere and the staff have to clear up most mornings before they start work in the shop. It's disgusting.”

Greater Manchester Police confirmed the incident is being investigated and that no arrests have yet been made.
