Promised yourself you’d exercise more? A personal trainer is the answer

Date published: 30 January 2015

We all need a little help with exercise sometimes, whether we're just starting out or we've been at it for a long time. Some people are unsure of what they'll get out of the experience or whether it's worth the money.

There are a number of reasons why people work with personal trainers. Some want a program designed specifically for them so they can lose weight or get in shape. Others need help and support to keep them motivated and on target to achieve their goals. Wherever you are in your exercise journey, a personal trainer may be just what you need.

We sat down for a chat with professional personal trainer, Mark Redfern of Personal Best Fitness, and asked him why people choose to have a personal trainer.

I want results

“For some people, there is nothing more demotivating and frustrating to be exercising consistently for several weeks or months and you either aren’t losing weight or reaching your goals. Hiring a personal trainer may be right for you to achieve the goals you want.

"A personal trainer can look at your current program and eating habits and we help you see where and how you could make changes to create more effective workouts. We can also help you set goals that are realistic for you, provide support and help you stay motivated. A personal trainer’s goal is the same as yours. To help you see results.”

I don’t know where to start

“This is where your personal trainer can be the biggest help.  A personal trainer will know how to set up an exercise schedule that’s individual and right for you. We create programs that include - weight training, cardio, core strength and flexibility. A personal trainer has the time and knowledge to choose the right program for you from the start. We can help you maximise your time while keeping you within your own limits so you don't overdo it. We also help you set realistic goals and map out a specific schedule so you know when, how and where you can fit in your workout routine.”

I get bored of the same workouts

“Some clients who come to a personal trainer are experienced exercisers. It can be a great for people who exercise regularly if you need some variety in your workouts. It keeps you motivated, gives you a fresh perspective and new ideas to challenge both your body and your mind. Some of my most experience clients come to me for a small number of sessions or we meet every few weeks. It gives them new workouts and new exercise equipment to work with.”

I need to be challenged

“Some people slack off sometimes, especially when things get a little tough, after a holiday or when they feel tired or have busy lives. A personal trainer can motivate you to push past your self-imposed limits. We encourage you to go longer, lift heavier and challenge yourself more than you would on your own. It's very hard to slack off with your trainer standing over you, telling you to do just one more rep.  You may even find hidden strengths you never knew you had.”

I need to keep motivated

“Hiring a personal trainer show that you are investing money into your exercise program; you're investing your time as well. We have in built motivation. A lot of clients use a personal trainer as it focuses them having an appointment with their trainer one to one. It certainly gets them in gear for a good workout. A personal trainer provides some accountability. Even when you don't have a session, your trainer will be keep in touch, motivating you to make sure you’re keeping on track.”

I want to learn how to exercise properly

“If you want to create your own workouts and exercise by yourself, hiring a personal trainer for a few sessions is the best way to learn the right way to exercise. We teach you how to target those muscles you need to and, a personal trainer will teach you how to exercise properly and design a program thats right for you. Training shows you how to learn a lot about your body, how it works and how to train it in the most effective way.”

I have an illness or injury

“If you have any specific issues, working with an experienced trainer who works with your doctor can help you find a program to help heal injuries and avoid any further problems. As a trainer working with cancer patients as well as clients with heart issues, arthritis and even pregnant clients, we know how to tailor make a package just for you in a safe and helpful way.”

I want one to one training

"If you are new to training we suggest you work one to one with a personal trainer for support and supervision. If you're lifting very heavy weights or need someone to help with partner-type exercises, working with a trainer is a great way to maximise your workout. For more experienced clients we spot for them during workouts and help them come up with a good training plan which can help them reach and often go beyond their personal goals.”
