Making your chips healthier

Date published: 02 February 2015

Takeaways are doing their bit to give you a healthier 2015 by working with Rochdale Borough Council to help reduce saturated fat and trans fat in chips.

The Healthier Choices scheme means you can reduce the saturated fat you consume when you tuck into chips. But it’s not about stopping you eating chips … we all like a treat.

Instead, participating takeaway owners have made small, sensible changes to frying techniques to reduce the amount of saturated fat in your chips. They will still be as tasty, but the healthier choice will make a big difference for you.

Thirty six takeaways are taking part.

They’re doing things like offering you smaller portion sizes, sieving the oil after each frying and using straight-cut chips, which soak up less fat. Some are cooking chips at 175C, and making them chunkier, further reducing their fat content.

February is National Heart Month, so now’s the time to think about healthier eating.

Research shows local people want takeaways to offer healthier chips, so now’s the perfect time to join them, by choosing a takeaway in the scheme.

Thousands of customers have benefitted since Healthier Choices was launched in 2012 and the Gold, Silver or Bronze rating displayed in takeaways shows how you easy it is to make a healthier choice while enjoying your food.

Remember to keep takeaway chips as a treat – and look out for the logo.

By choosing healthier chips you’ll be doing your heart a big favour.
