Pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants across the town centre of Rochdale stand to gain from the £1.5 million worth of investment over the next five years in making the town centre a safer, more attractive and vibrant town centre which is family orientated and welcoming to all.
The investment will be generated through the Business Improvement District or BID plan which businesses have been working on over the last eighteen months and is going to ballot in October.
Chris Riley, manager of the Regal Moon Pub in Rochdale, said: "This is a great initiative and we all stand to benefit. As businesses in the town centre will have the ability to decide how we spend the money to address things which affect our customers and their ability to enjoy themselves in the town centre.
"One of the initiatives included in the plan is the introduction of Ambassadors in the town centre. They will be in uniform and contactable by radio or mobile phone and there to help the public, work with businesses on day to day issues and work closely with the police acting as eyes and ears to tackle anti-social behaviour, street begging and crime.
"The perception of the town centre is a real issue both during the day and the night so having a friendly team of people to support visitors and businesses on a day-to-day basis will be of real benefit.
"Rochdale is great town with a great community and we need to capitalise on that to welcome everyone here to enjoy themselves."
The businesses have been working closely with the police and the council on the development of the BID plan to make sure that the business’s activities will complement and support the normal services and not replace them. The aim is to make sure that existing services become even more effective by working together and helping to prioritise and target issues which businesses see as important to them and their customers.
