BMI The Highfield Hospital's New Breast Screening Service is being officially opened on Tuesday 16 May 2017 by the Mayor of Rochdale Ray Dutton and Tracy Jackson, Executive Director of the hospital.

Our new screening service is here to help you understand different conditions that may affect you as you go through the different stages of life, what can be done to treat them and how to keep you healthy.

You can expect to be looked after by the same consultant, from diagnosis to treatment, and throughout your aftercare, ensuring that you receive all the benefits of personalised care.
To make sure you feel as comfortable as possible, female chaperones are always available.
It’s the little things that make the difference.

For most people, breast health can create worry and anxiety, even though many changes are absolutely normal and nothing to be concerned about.

How should I check my breasts?

Checking your breasts takes less than five minutes and it could turn out to be the most valuable five minutes of your life. Please don’t put it off, it’s only five minutes after all.

1. Look in the mirror, shoulders straight, hands on your hips. You are looking at the size, shape and colour of your breasts.
2. Now raise your arms and repeat the inspection.
3. Next, feel your breasts while lying down. Use a firm touch with the first few fingers of your hand, creating a circular motion with closed fingers. Make sure you check the entire breast, including your nipple and armpit.
4. Last breast check – whilst standing or sitting. The bath or shower is often a good place as your skin will be wet and slippery, helping to detect any irregular lumps and bumps.

What should I be looking for?

Common signs and symptoms (which also apply to men) include:

• Any swelling or a lump in the breast or armpit
• Changes in the skin including dimpling or puckering
• Constant pain in part of the breast or armpit
• Any changes in sensation, especially if in one breast only
• A rash or crusting on the nipple of surrounding area
• Changes in the shape of the breast
• Discharge or fluid from the nipple

The aim of the clinic is to ensure patients who are concerned about any symptoms are seen as soon as possible.

Consultant breast surgeons, Mr Mohammed Absar and Mr Simon Ellenbogen specialise in the management of breast disease and lead the clinic.

• Full screening including Consultation, imaging and follow up: £585

When are the clinics?

The hospital has two Rapid Access Breast Clinics during the week and an appointment will take approximately one to two hours.

To book an appointment, you can contact the hospital directly by calling the x-ray department on 01706 766650 or outside working hours on 0808 101 0337.

Alternatively, you can be referred via your GP and the hospital will follow up your GP referral for you if necessary.
