Working Towards a United Community

Date published: 29 November 2004

Business is soaring in Rochdale, and much of the success has originated from business support organisations such as the Rochdale Asian Business Support Agency (RABSA). With aims to promote and support fellow businesses, RABSA has quickly emerged to generate new ideas and support start up businesses throughout the borough.

As a result of their success, on 24 November RABSA organised an Eid Celebration and Awards ceremony at Rochdale Town Hall to congratulate fellow colleagues and clients on their achievements. Also supporting the event were Rochdale MP Lorna Fitzsimons and Councillor Alan Brett, who enjoyed an Asian meal with the RABSA team. Lorna Fitzsimons said, “It’s all of you coming together that makes it happen, it’s good to see more events were the Asian community is celebrated.”

Mr G.R. Shahzad, General Secretary of RABSA, is enthusiastic about his ideas for the people of Rochdale. He said, “We all choose to live in our own comfort zones. We may have different views on certain things, but we are also very similar. Rochdale is a multi–cultural society, and we should unite and all work together as a team”. The audience applauded in agreement, and with support from Rochdale MP Lorna Fitzsimons, Rochdale Council and the local community this is achievable.

The awards were given to certain small businesses from Rochdale, mostly for attending extra courses in Health and Safety, Food Hygiene and First Aid.

The following people represented their companies:

  • Mr Shahid Iqbal - Worldwide Cash and Carry
  • Mr Imtiaz Ahmad - Kebabish Original
  • Mr M Asjad Mughal - Pizza Pan
  • Mr Naveed Khan - On behalf of Wattan Cash and Carry

The aims of the RABSA are also reflected out of business hours, as Mr. Shahzad also organised a Mosque Open Evening on Saturday 27 November at the Madina Mosque, Newbold.
