Council ignoring plight of independent traders?

Rochdale Council Officers stand accused of ignoring the plight of independent traders in the town centre following businesses in town suffering a spate of problems with vandalism and lead theft. MP Paul Rowen organised a meeting in August and several councillors, including Ann Metcalfe and Angel Coric, attended, however, the relevant 'safer communities' officers from the council did not.
The lead thefts have started up and cause considerable damage to roofs; those affected who were at the meeting are angry that a promised second meeting has not taken place
A further meeting was planned but has not taken place and it transpires the reason is that the 'safer communities' officers from the council refuse to attend.
Paul Rowen has told the independent traders he is "disgusted" and has emailed Rochdale Council Chief Executive Roger Ellis.
A spokesman for the traders said: "So much for supporting what few independents we have left in the town".
Mr Rowen said: “Following continued representation a meeting has now been arranged for early January. This Council needs to build a solid working relationship with traders, especially in view of renaissance of our town centre. The results of the previous meeting with the police was successful and led to an increased police presence and also more resources including better use of the CCTV Systems. It is true that I have been frustrated with the Council but I am pleased that my pressure has led to this meeting.
"I also have other concerns that are being addressed. These include the unsociable time of the PACT Meetings – these are the police liaison meetings. To have them in the middle of the afternoon is incredibly frustrating for small independent traders. I have asked that these are moved to a time to suit traders and not Council Officers. This will be discussed at the meeting.”
The meeting will be held with Drake Street Traders on Thurs 03/01/08 @ 5.15pm - 6.30pm Committee Room 1 Town Hall.
