The future looks bright for Rochdale businesses

At this time of the year, it is customary to take stock of the months that have passed. It could mean reflecting on what we have achieved, what we could have done better or differently, or thinking about our goals for the New Year.
For me, this year has been all about learning and being inspired. After 10 months in my role as Rochdale President of the Chamber, I have learned so much about the local business community. Like many of us, I was guilty of founding my views on perception. The reality is that the Rochdale business community is not only vibrant, but also dynamic in many different industry sectors. I was surprised to discover that investments (Growth Development Fund) in the Rochdale borough are some of the highest in the North West. This makes Rochdale a very desirable area to do business, also strategically positioned with an easy commute around the region and the country. Furthermore, when visiting companies in the borough, I have been amazed at the amount of talent, expertise, creativity and technical skills on offer.
Above all, our Chamber guests and members who have regularly attended Chamber events, have been a constant source of inspiration. The last event earlier this month saw over 60 guests learning about the skills and employment opportunities offered by the Chamber through the Employer Ownership of Skills initiative. I would like to thank members for their continuing support and for making events an exciting forum to do business and learn.
Over the next 12 months, my goals will focus on bringing together those talented people, local businesses as well as key stakeholders, thus encouraging networking as well as facilitating business. The Chamber is always keen to respond to key issues affecting the local business community. We have some exciting speakers lined up in the New Year, starting with a business rates specialist at our event in March, who will update businesses from the retail sector on how they can reduce this costly tax. Have a look at the Chamber’s website www.gmchamber.co.uk/events for more information about our events.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a peaceful Christmas and a prosperous year in 2014.
