Small Business Saturday

Date published: 07 December 2013

Businesses took part in Small Business Saturday in Rochdale, Heywood and Middleton town centres today (Saturday 7 December) - a day set-aside in the shopping calendar aimed at supporting, celebrating and championing small businesses.

Lingerie shop, Chantilly had more custom due to Small Business Saturday. Margery Thompson said: “It has been a brilliant day. We have been busier than usual and I think town has been busier than usual.”

Oliver Hope, of Denis Hope on Drake Street, said: “We haven’t really had any extra custom because of Small Business Saturday but it seemed silly not to take part.”

Michael Shepherd who owns Cameo Cards and The Stationary Shop on Market Street in Heywood had a busy day thanks to Small Business Saturday. He said: “It has been a good day. We have been busier than usual and I think it is good to try and promote local businesses and is a good way to try and increase footfall.”

Beverly Park, owner of All About Flowers in Milnrow wanted to take part as a way of trying to get extra business in her flower shop. Beverly said: “It is a good idea to promote yourself and what you do.”

Shops involved in today’s event took part in a window dressing competition.

Beverly added: “I always decorate the shop but thought I would do it for the competition and see what happened.”

Andrea Ashworth, co owner of The Secret Wardrobe in Littleborough thought the day was a good idea. She said: “I think small businesses offer a better variety than the high street and I think that is something good to promote.”

The Secret Wardrobe is a relatively new shop to Littleborough and has only been open for 10 weeks. Andrea added: “I think Littleborough is an up and coming town and think more people are coming here so it seemed like a good thing to get involved with today.”

Andrea added: “I think it is a good idea so I would do it again.”
