Officers from Greater Manchester Police are urging jewellery traders to avoid falling victim to thieves targeting them in the days leading up to Christmas.
Traders who buy and sell jewellery have been tracked around the country by criminals and had their cars attacked and stock stolen.
There have been three cases in Greater Manchester.
Detective Sergeant Simon Akker, based at Salford CID, said: "I do not wish to frighten people because we are not talking about a prolific problem.
"However, we have dealt with a few instances where jewellery salesmen have been tracked and followed and we believe this was by people intending to steal their stock.
"We are reminding people to be vigilant when they are travelling around for work and asking them to keep their vehicle as safe as they can.
"Some simple tips include parking your car in a garage if possible and, if not, park somewhere that is busy, well lit and open and check your car regularly to ensure items like trackers have not been stuck on to them.
"Always let someone know what your movements are going to be and if you become suspicious that someone is monitoring you on your travels, please contact police.
"Salesman should review the security of their stock whilst in transit and ensure it is kept as safe as possible.
"We would ask anybody in the industry who believes they have been followed or has any other information to contact police."
Greater Manchester Police can be contacted on 0161 872 5050 or information can be reported through Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
