Townhead Junction Update

Date published: 12 February 2008

Work is ongoing within the centre of the roundabout to install the kerbs, drainage and cabling for the new traffic lights. Work has begun to remove the kerbs around the inside of the roundabout, which has required the inside lane of the roundabout to be closed between 9:30am and 3:30pm Monday to Friday for the next three weeks. The roads on the approach to the roundabout also have to be narrowed down to one lane during this work for safety reasons.

The subway under St Mary’s Gate has been permanently closed to the public. Over the coming months, this subway will be removed and replaced with safer surface pedestrian crossings. Pedestrians are advised to use the adjacent subway at the end of Cheetham Street, by following signs for this alternative crossing point.

The traffic island within Yorkshire Street has now been removed and will be replaced with a new signal controlled pedestrian crossing.

Regular updates on the progress of the junction improvements will be made available over the coming weeks on this web site.
