Employment Law and Red Tape Top List of Business Concerns

Date published: 07 September 2006

Employment law and red tape are the main concerns of Greater Manchester companies, according to the latest business survey.

Greater Manchester Chamber’s 2006 Issues Barometer reveals that over 60 per cent of those who responded were concerned about employment legislation and almost 60 per cent of them felt the burden of regulation was having a negative impact on their business.

Adam Howell, Economic Research Executive, said: “These results are an accurate picture of the key issues facing our members and businesses generally. Yet again employment legislation and the growing regulatory burden were members’ biggest concerns.

“This was followed by economic prospects for Greater Manchester, a growing concern in light of rising energy costs and intense global competition. Also, health and safety, and workforce development and training.

“Business rates, taxation and work life balance were also high on the list. With concern over rising long-term absence and payments made to the long-term sick, employers are aware now more than ever of the need to ensure the welfare of their employees. Members felt there was a need to strike a balance so that new legislation does not burden small businesses unfavourably.”

The Chamber uses the annual Issues Barometer to focus its lobbying activity and keep members up to date with the latest business issues.
