Unemployment falls in Rochdale

Date published: 22 April 2010

Unemployment has fallen again in Rochdale according to figures released today.

The total number of people claiming Jobseekers’ Allowance in the borough last month was 7,585 compared with 7,706 the month before.

Dr Brian Sloan, Head of Business & Economic Policy at Greater Manchester Chamber, said: "The latest unemployment figures reveal a drop in the claimant count across every area of Greater Manchester.

“This is positive news and those out of work are quickly finding alternative employment, as predicted by the positive intentions of businesses to recruit in our recent Quarterly Economic Survey.

“Also good news is the increase in the number of vacancies, however there is a downside to the latest release: the number of people in employment has fallen and the number of unemployed has increased across the North West, indicating that long term unemployment is increasing.”
