Tony Nugent Elected President of Rochdale Chamber Council

Date published: 27 February 2007

Tony Nugent, Managing Director of Anthony K Associates, has been elected President of the Rochdale Local Chamber Council of GM Chamber of Commerce.

Greater Manchester Chamber is the largest in the country and covers ten local authority areas: Manchester, Salford, Wigan, Trafford, Bolton, Bury, Stockport, Tameside, Rochdale and Oldham. Each of these areas has a Local Chamber Council.

The Rochdale Local Chamber Council is the best way to engage with Chamber activity in Rochdale. It brings together representatives from the local business community to develop and implement a local area action plan which directs the policy priorities being tackled in Rochdale.  The Rochdale Chamber Council aims to:

  • Identify and prioritise members’ issues
  • Inform members of changes in government policy and local initiatives likely to impact on the local business community
  • Identify appropriate methods of consultation and lobbying
  • Produce policy statements for the lobbying of key decision makers locally

Prior to forming Anthony K Associates, Tony worked in the finance and leasing industry since 1982 in various roles and has extensive knowledge of the motor industry.

He has been actively involved with the Rochdale Chamber since 1997 prior to its merger with Manchester Chamber holding positions on the Board, one of which was Chairman of the Membership Council which was responsible for dealing with members’ local concerns and growth in membership.

Commenting after his election, Tony said: "I have a great belief in local businesses doing business with each other when at all possible. Why travel a 100 miles when they may be an opportunity to do business locally. It makes more sense and you build relationships by seeing and talking to people whom you meet on a regular basis. Local networking cannot be underestimated and I have my best clients all within a small driving distance. You could say this is my contribution to reducing our carbon footprint as a business”

In his spare time Tony is a qualified international referee for Men’s Lacrosse, having been connected with Rochdale Lacrosse Club for over 35 years and has enjoyed travelling in several countries including USA and Italy. Up to recently he was Chairman of the Lacrosse Club and was involved in boy’s junior development at the club. He said: “It is very time consuming but when you see lads enjoying and developing their skills it is very rewarding to see their progress. There is an image that the sport can be rough but it is a very skilful, fast game and as an ex-player it brought me a lot of friends along the way”

Tony is looking forward to the role of Local President and is keen to increase awareness of the benefits of being a Chamber member and to increase the number of members in the local area.
